NEST Analysis – A team that is accustomed to success, the Warriors will attempt to rebound after a disappointing 2019 season. A 6-10 record is highly unusual for Westside, a program rich in tradition and talent. Normally this would be a team easily placed in the contender or front runner status category. However, for right now they are in the “dark horse” classification until evidence of a turnaround is apparent. Coach Michael Dean will need to refocus his players in order to reclaim their traditional stature.

Do not be shocked to see Omaha Westside at Morrison Stadium in May. The Warriors have been placed on our list for Teams on the Verge. They could easily enter our Top 10 sooner rather than later.

NEST Analysis – Just like Elkhorn High, South will feel some effects of a third high school opening in the district. Less students equals a smaller player pool to choose from, which is never great for the coaching staff. However, unlike the Antlers, Elkhorn South has stability and known talent in the coaching ranks. After the team took a step back during the 2019 season, Coach Jon Shaad will be overseeing a program full of motivation and expectation. Elkhorn South can and should be competing at the top of Class A on a yearly basis. Sam Sundstrom, Tyler Parks, Miles Schmit, and Carson Chochon form the core of this team going into the 2021 season. The Storm begin the 2021 season just outside the Top 10, as they are a Team on the Verge. That situation could change drastically after a few early season results.

NEST Analysis – Grand Island is one of the most interesting programs in Class A on a consistent basis. The interest factor stems from the fact that they regularly compete with and beat metro area teams on the biggest of stages. 2021 could be one of those special seasons on the island. The Islanders debut in our pre-season poll ranked #8 in Class A. 

Traditionally this is a team that has a fast, aggressive, and possession heavy style of play that is fantastic to watch. During his freshman season in 2019, Javier Baide introduced himself with authority. In 15 appearances, Baide totaled 13 goals and 9 assists in 2019. Now in his junior season, Baide and his teammates will look to make a run at state.

NEST Analysis – To call this team ‘young’ would be an understatement, as they return with only a few starters. New faces will be all over the field as Fremont looks to grow during the 2021 season. For many youngsters, 2021 will be a learning experience that can be used in the future. The comparison between the start of their season and the end will be telling for the trajectory of the program. 

Undoubtedly, Coach Sean Murphy will maximize the talent at his disposal. Fremont is never an easy out for any opponent. Home games will be crucial to their success as they have thrived there in the past.

In the Tigers’ favor is the fact that they seem to have a potential anchor in net. Freshman goalkeeper Caleb Kirby is an impressive prospect with easily observable skills. Long, instinctual, and disciplined are great traits to build upon with a keeper. Others will make their marks as well and the NEST will be there with a watchful eye.

NEST Analysis – Creighton Prep is a program very familiar with high expectations, and the 2021 season will be no exception. The last time we witnessed their play was in the 2019 Class A state championship. It will be exciting to see if this team can return to that stage and finish with a different result. An excellent season is anticipated as Creighton Prep ranked #1 in our Class A pre-season poll.

Prep has a fantastic squad that is filled with talent at almost every position. It is a school that attracts soccer talent year in and year out. Ryan Brakke will be a player to watch as he is the latest Bluejay to fulfill Division I dreams. Brakke recently signed with Creighton University and will be showcasing his talents in Omaha for years to come. 

Finally, Coach Hoover brings an almost unrivaled amount of experience. He and his staff have built a tremendous program. His teams are a pleasure for any soccer fan to watch.

NEST Analysis – Coach Mathews should be incredibly excited about her team’s prospects in 2021. This is a program that has been building and all of that work has been aimed towards this upcoming year. It appears that a “golden generation” type of situation is taking place within the Lincoln East program. A returning triple threat of Haley Peterson, Briley Hill, and Annie Mulder have the Spartans poised for a momentous campaign. All three of those talented players are committed to play for high level Division I programs. Even though Class A was a difficult field to choose from due to the fact there are many talented players and teams throughout the state this year, Lincoln East claims the top spot in the NEST pre-season rankings. The Spartans will begin the season ranked #1 in Class A, and they are considered to be the favorites for the state title. High expectations can be a blessing and a curse for any program. Challenges will surface, but the best teams are able to overcome those obstacles.

With that being said, much of this is subjective and opinions can vary. The rankings will be updated on bi-weekly basis. To the best of our ability, these rankings will reflect the reality of the soccer environment. Adjustments will be made as the season progresses and many conversations will take place. We look forward to those discussions. At season’s end, we will look back to review these pre-season rankings. What did we get right? Where did we go wrong? Which team surprised us all?

NEST Analysis – The Thunderbirds participated in three shootouts in 2019. They were competitive in virtually every game, which is the reasoning behind our “building” status. Victories over programs like Millard West, Omaha Westside, and Elkhorn South are fantastic focus points for any program. 

Anyone that has been around the game long enough has known a time like this. Bellevue West is just waiting to turn the corner and enter into contender status. There is no guarantee that such a change takes place, but there are two reasons for optimism. One of those reasons paces the sideline; the other displays his skills on the field. Coach Alan Carr is a well known and respected soccer mind throughout the metro area. His expertise is essential to the squad’s success. On the field, Cole Hoppe will be a focal point during the 2021 season. His teammates will need to compliment his play, but Hoppe is a good player to build around.

NEST Analysis – Bellevue East is a program searching for an identity and momentum. In 2019, the Chieftains struggled against high level programs, but were able to win against other struggling squads. With the cancellation of the 2020 season, a dramatic turnaround is not out of the realm of possibility. Look for Schyler Smeby to lead this team during the 2021 campaign, as Smeby impressed many throughout the recent club season. 

Being situated in an open district is both a blessing and a curse. If results are going your way, players flock to your program. However, in challenging times, aspects such as player retention and morale can struggle at all levels. Under these circumstances, developing relationships at the youth level should be a priority.
