NEST Analysis – The city of Columbus is bursting with soccer skill. Columbus Lakeview will have its fair share of that talent, but with that comes expectations for the 2021 season. Coach Mike Zimmerman and his squad are sure to embrace that optimistic outlook. With multiple winning records in recent history, the Vikings will be looking to claim a spot at the state tournament. Even though they fall outside our initial Pre-Season Top 10, Lakeview could very well prove that to be a mistake. Right now, they are a Team on the Verge for Class B.

NEST Analysis – Another Columbus team will be in the discussion for the Class B title this season. Coach Kristie Brezenksi has built a model program that many around the state would love to emulate. Columbus Scotus are a consistent threat to any opponent and will play an effective style of soccer. During the 2021 season, Scotus will be led by Kamryn Schohon. This is a talented player that will be looking to elevate her profile with soccer supporters. Columbus Scotus will begin the season ranked #4 in our Pre-Season Top 10. Big things are expected, and we are ready to see this team play.

NEST Analysis – Columbus Lakeview is searching for steps in the right direction as the program undergoes a rebuild. A cancelled 2020 season may have been of some benefit for Lakeview as they were handed an extra year to develop and regroup. A solid core of returners gives hope to the 2021 season. More talent will need to be added, and this is far from a one year turnaround. However, an increase in the win column would be a huge step forward. Columbus Lakeview has potential within their locker room, now it is about building a foundation. The soon to be released schedules will have a major impact on this team’s outlook. Nebraska Soccer Talk will be waiting patiently to examine those match ups.

NEST Analysis – For the better part of the decade, this Discoverer program has been on an impressive run of winning double digit games. The lone exception came in 2019, as Columbus finished with a .500 record for the first time since 2013. Look for this program to rebound during the 2021 season. The cancelled 2020 season could serve as a reset and launching pad for another successful run.

The Discoverers will once again be joining the ranks of Class A for at least this season. Altering between Class A & Class B seems to be a regular challenge that the players and coaches must navigate. From the research, it appears that an under the radar soccer hub has been operating in Northeast, Nebraska at Columbus High School. This program has our attention and Nebraska Soccer Talk will be watching closely for any noteworthy players that deserve recognition. The club status within Columbus is a bit unknown, but the high school programs appear healthy and competitive. This squad can be found on our Pre-Season list of Teams on the Verge.

NEST Analysis – After a disappointing 2018 season, Columbus Scotus returned to their proper place among the top-tier in Class B during 2019. More of the same is expected in 2021 as the Shamrocks look to win the Clash of Columbus. With two very good teams occupying the same city and class, an exciting competition full of pride and rivalry is soon to be underway. A playing style centered around possession, confidence on the ball, and pace can be anticipated. By the end of the season, Nebraska Soccer Talk expects more than a few standout players to emerge from this squad. As a result of that belief, Columbus Scotus enters the 2021 season as the #6 ranked team in Class B.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class B State Runner Up

NEST Analysis – In 2019, Columbus surprised many as they rampaged their way through Class B. A season full of success ended at Morrison Stadium as they lifted a runner-up state trophy, a highlight for this program. A surprise no longer, the Discoverers are on everyone’s radar heading into 2021. With winning and success, comes attention and expectation, a welcomed development for a prideful squad. Although they are almost two years removed from that historic season, Columbus returns an excellent core of players. Juan Rodriguez provides the team with an attacking threat that must be accounted for throughout a match. Israel Robledo, Jorge Tovar, and Garrett Esch add to this quality lineup. Coach John Arlt is an experienced leader that demands absolute commitment from his team. With all of those pieces, another memorable season could be right around the corner.

Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. In the following article series, we will reveal our Pre-season Top 10 rankings for the 2021 season.

This poll was developed while considering many different factors including program track records, recommendations from coaches, and roster strength. With that being said, much of this is subjective and opinions can vary. The rankings will be updated on bi-weekly basis. To the best of our ability, these rankings will reflect the reality of the soccer environment. Adjustments will be made as the season progresses and many conversations will take place. We look forward to those discussions. At season’s end, we will look back to review these preseason rankings. What did we get right? Where did we go wrong? Which team surprised us all?

Also including in each article is a section title Teams on the Verge. These teams ranked just outside our Top 10 but are considered to be in contention. The rankings are fluid and flexible, any team could quickly enter our Top 10 list.

Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. In the future, we hope to provide sideline coverage of games, facility features, coach and player interviews. We look forward to the journey ahead. Thank you for being a part of our community. NEST Analysis – The men’s program at Bellevue University is one of the intriguing squads in the state for several reasons. First and foremost, there are many homegrown Nebraskans that have been given an opportunity to play at the next level by the Bruins. Secondly, there is an overhanging feeling that this program is at the cusp of becoming a consistent title contender in the conference. Their 2018 season demonstrated how far this program has come in recent years, and they are looking for that to become the norm. Finally, from a recruiting and living standpoint, Bellevue University has advantages simply because of its placement in Sarpy County. Newly constructed  facilities located at Papillion Landing give the Bruins a major upgrade. Unlike many other small-town NAIA schools, the allure of the Omaha metro area is there for the Bruins to exploit.  With all of those recruiting pulls, the Bruins are a team to watch.
