At Nebraska Soccer Talk, we love covering everything soccer related. For the most part, that means covering games and providing analysis/opinions. However, our overall mission and purpose is far reaching and ambitious. Our goal is to bring the soccer community closer together through collaboration and communication.  There are countless people that deserve recognition for their efforts as a player, official, or coach. Throughout the season, we will be highlighting these individuals through our Get To Know Me articles.

This will be a series made up of three different components. All of which are meant to bring attention to the soccer community.

1. Get To Know Me (Coach Edition) – These individuals are responsible for building their programs, growing the game of soccer, and mentoring the next generation. We look forward to learning about their lives and philosophies.
2. Get To Know Me (Player Edition) – This article series will focus on high school juniors and seniors that have demonstrated themselves to be quality players and people. With these features, our community will learn about some of the most impressive players in the state.
3. Future of the Game – This article series will focus on the freshmen and sophomore classes. These are players that we will be covering for years to come.

What is your favorite subject in school? Why? My favorite subject is biology because I want to go into the Medical Field when I am older.

What are your goals as an individual player? What are you doing to achieve those goals? 

As a player, I have set many goals for myself so that I am always improving. Some goals I made at the beginning of the year are improving my speed, my footwork, and my confidence. With the pandemic, I had a lot of free time to get some touches on the ball everyday and go on runs in the mornings. I also went up to the field a few times and worked on some drills and my shot with my sister.

What goals do you have for your high school team during the 2021 season and beyond? What do you hope to accomplish as a group throughout your high school career? 

This high school season I hope to follow in the footsteps of the last season and work our hardest to make it to state and possibly win it! I also hope that throughout my high school career my team continues to improve and get better together.

Who’s your favorite soccer player and why? 

My favorite soccer player is Tobin Heath. She has AMAZING footwork and is always creating opportunities for her team. She is a great team player and always seems very positive and happy to be on the field and playing soccer.

NEST Analysis – 2021 will be a season full of firsts for Elkhorn North. Little is known about the newest program in Class B. They will be one of the youngest varsity squads in the state with mainly freshmen and sophomore players. However, inexperience does not directly put limits on talent, as proven by Elkhorn North’s basketball team. 2021 will be an incredible opportunity for many young players to introduce themselves to the state. The Wolves will be one of the most interesting stories, not only this year, but for the foreseeable future.

NEST Analysis – Elkhorn will be a highly competitive team during the 2021 spring season. This program will be led by a talented goal scorer named Hanna King. She is the centerpiece of the Antler squad and is one of the best overall players in the state. Look for her on our Pre-Season Players To Watch list. Throughout the season, the emergence of additional talent will be the most pressing issue. As of now, Elkhorn is ranked #9 in Class B in Nebraska Soccer Talk’s Pre-Season rankings. That ranking is influenced greatly by recent history and squad projections. Early season matches will be a key evaluation opportunity.

NEST Analysis – This is the first year of existence for the Elkhorn North boys soccer program. For those in the program, this is sure to be an incredibly exciting time but also a period of detailed work. A result of district growth, North will face many challenges that other programs simply do not have to consider. For one, this will be one of the youngest varsity squads in the entire state. Rightfully so, a grace period will be extended to the Wolves just as there is with any MLS expansion team. Coach Fred Doscher will have the responsibility of building this new program. An experienced and well respected soccer mind, Coach Doscher is a good fit for the task. He would also be an incredible interview for Nebraska Soccer Talk, as few have been in this position. On the field, there are a few Wolves that grab our attention. Jack Vokt, Logan Hanigan, Michael Grigsby, and Jon Doschet are all great building blocks for the future. Elkhorn North is sure to be an intriguing storyline during the 2021 season and beyond.

NEST Analysis – An already competitive Class A field is adding another powerhouse to the schedule as the 2019 Class B champions will now join the ranks. Elkhorn South should fit right in as they too have talent within their program. Mia Baltzell will be a highlight of a Storm squad looking to reload and reintroduce itself to the state. NEST Analysis – With a new school opening recently in the district, there are many unknowns surrounding all of the Elkhorn programs. Elkhorn High may in fact have been hit the hardest by these expansion plans as this team lost its head coach to the new school. Although no upperclassmen were lost, underclassmen were restructured. With that in mind, Elkhorn still has the potential to be a premier Class B program due to its size, resources, athletic pool, and tradition. After a disappointing 2019 campaign, the Antlers will look to find more success in 2021. Parker Gamerl and Sam Vejnovich are quality players that will help with that pursuit. With so many unknowns, yet so much potential, Nebraska Soccer Talk has listed Elkhorn High as the dark horse of Class B. They have also been listed as a Team on the Verge, meaning they are just outside of our preseason Top 10 list. A few quality showings could springboard them into contention.

Over the course of four articles, NEST will recognize many outstanding athletes that everyone should look forward to seeing on the pitch.

This list was put together using several resources such as coach recommendations, past all-state lists, statistical analysis from previous seasons, and observational research. The inclusions vary greatly in terms of location, age, and future plans. The listed athletes live in every corner of the state from Omaha to Scottsbluff. Many have signed or are committed to play soccer at the Division I level, while others are pursuing other interests in the future.

Even so, there are two traits that all inclusions of the inaugural NEST Players to Watch preview have in common.

1. Show stopping and jaw dropping ability on the field.
2. An admirable love for the sport of soccer. With their ability, passion, and outreach, this game will grow; that is the ultimate goal of Nebraska Soccer Talk.

A special congratulations to all of the athletes. Your hard work, skill, and dedication deserve to be recognized. Nebraska Soccer Talk will be observing closely as your season and career progress.

This poll was developed while considering many different factors including program track records, recommendations from coaches, and roster strength. With that being said, much of this is subjective and opinions can vary. The rankings will be updated on bi-weekly basis. To the best of our ability, these rankings will reflect the reality of the soccer environment. Adjustments will be made as the season progresses and many conversations will take place. We look forward to those discussions. At season’s end, we will look back to review these pre-season rankings. What did we get right? Where did we go wrong? Which team surprised us all?

Also, included in each article is a section titled Teams on the Verge. These teams ranked just outside our Top 10 but are considered to be in contention. The rankings are fluid and flexible; any team could quickly enter our Top 10 list.
