Adding onto that difficulty are challenges, such as a cancelled 2020 season and lingering COVID restrictions, making our preview preparation feel almost impossible.

Despite these obstacles, the approaching 2021 season and its participants – whether that be players, coaches, fans, or families – deserve some semblance of normalcy. Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. Over the course of the next several weeks, NEST will overview EVERY high school soccer program in our state. This was done to the best of our ability using all of the information we could collect.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to support many fantastic teams, coaches, players, fans, and referees that make our game possible. One mission of this venture is to discover and centralize newsworthy information. This can only be done in collaboration with individual programs. As a whole, our sport must better promote itself in order to grow the player and supporter pool. We encourage every team to proudly and consistently advertise itself to us and the general public. The more information available, the more our game will grow. Soccer is a game historically left behind to linger in the background in the United States. That circumstance is changing, but that change will not happen automatically. Growing and covering all aspects of our sport will take effort from all of those who love it.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class B State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – Grand Island Northwest was absolutely the surprise of the 2019 season. The Vikings more than doubled their previous win total and captured a coveted slot at the state tournament. With the cancellation of the 2020 season, supporters were robbed of seeing an encore performance. 2021 provides Grand Island Northwest with the opportunity to reinforce the notion that this is a program on the rise. Najib Ortiz and Jarit Mejia will be two key members on this varsity lineup as they look to propel their team forward. Both of those players have cemented themselves onto our all-time name list, now they look to earn a spot on our post-season Best XI. Grand Island Northwest is a team to watch throughout the 2021 season. Nebraska Soccer Talk has placed them on our list of Teams on the Verge meaning the Vikings could soon find themselves inside the Top 10.

NEST Analysis – Clarity of objectives, youth outreach, and continual on-field progress should be the main focus points for the Islanders. Those three factors should be at the forefront not only in 2021 but well into the future. Simply stated, this Grand Island program should be able to produce more favorable results. It is the only Class A school in a relatively large community that has proven to be very interested in the game of soccer. Unlike many communities, Grand Island has a first class indoor soccer facility that can be utilized throughout the entire year. Upgrades to their own facilities should also be utilized to uplift this team. Other Islander programs, including the boys soccer team, have developed high rates of talent and success. This is a program that needs to flourish in order for the game to expand in the state of Nebraska. At Nebraska Soccer Talk, these are the stories we are here to cover. Coach Hanaphy and his program are worth supporting and covering. Once it “clicks”, the Lady Islander will be dangerous on the state stage. Those developments will be exciting when and if they do come.

Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. In the future, we hope to provide sideline coverage of games, facility features, coach and player interviews. We look forward to the journey ahead. Thank you for being a part of our community. 2020 will be Coach Weides 13th season as head coach of the bulldogs program. Throughout his years in charge, his squad has compiled a 117-89-24 record and consistently achieved program firsts. Overall, this is a great coaching story as Coach Weides worked his way through the high school ranks and served as an assistant coach before getting a chance to lead a program. Since that time, Concordia has been a consistent winner in a tough GPAC field. With Weides at the helm, Concordia will have a stable and successful program for many years to come.

The roster is filled with international talent from Nebraska to England to Columbia. With that type of variety, some teams would fail to develop proper on-field chemistry. However, that is simply not the case with these bulldogs, which is a testament to the strong team culture. We can’t wait to cover this program for years to come.

NEST Analysis – Grand Island is one of the most interesting programs in Class A on a consistent basis. The interest factor stems from the fact that they regularly compete with and beat metro area teams on the biggest of stages. 2021 could be one of those special seasons on the island. The Islanders debut in our pre-season poll ranked #8 in Class A. 

Traditionally this is a team that has a fast, aggressive, and possession heavy style of play that is fantastic to watch. During his freshman season in 2019, Javier Baide introduced himself with authority. In 15 appearances, Baide totaled 13 goals and 9 assists in 2019. Now in his junior season, Baide and his teammates will look to make a run at state.

NEST Analysis – One must look no further than Hastings’ jerseys to understand the standard of the program. Located just above the school logo are two stars: each representing a national championship. Its most recent championship campaign took place in 2016. Hastings has undoubtedly become the state’s most consistent and successful men’s soccer program year in and year out. Just last year, the Broncos were one victory away from adding a third star to their jersey. In his third year, Coach Bohnenkamp has put together a large and interesting roster. Like many NAIA schools, Hastings is fortunate that Nebraska is home to only two D1 soccer programs, both of which tend to recruit internationally.  Hastings always seems to capitalize on this situation by bringing in some of the best talent that Nebraska has to offer. Combining those high-level homegrown players with prospects from all over the world makes this squad a case study for success. Hastings College is an exciting program that we will look forward to covering. Any Nebraska team that produces championships, All-Americans, and professionals has our attention.
