NEST Analysis – With a new school opening recently in the district, there are many unknowns surrounding all of the Elkhorn programs. Elkhorn High may in fact have been hit the hardest by these expansion plans as this team lost its head coach to the new school. Although no upperclassmen were lost, underclassmen were restructured. With that in mind, Elkhorn still has the potential to be a premier Class B program due to its size, resources, athletic pool, and tradition. After a disappointing 2019 campaign, the Antlers will look to find more success in 2021. Parker Gamerl and Sam Vejnovich are quality players that will help with that pursuit. With so many unknowns, yet so much potential, Nebraska Soccer Talk has listed Elkhorn High as the dark horse of Class B. They have also been listed as a Team on the Verge, meaning they are just outside of our preseason Top 10 list. A few quality showings could springboard them into contention.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – 2020 was supposed to be the year of the Titan in Class A girls soccer. Perhaps no program was left wondering and wanting more than Papillion-La Vista South. There is little doubt that a highly talented and experienced 2020 squad could have been the best in school history. However, the Titans must leave those “what ifs” behind as they prepare to fulfill those ambitions this year. Allie Napora returns to the high school game and provides a huge boost to the Titan roster. An extremely talented sophomore class will need to adapt to the Class A level very quickly after missing their freshman season. Much of the stand out talent is located at the attacking positions, so it’s no secret the opposing goalkeepers will be kept very busy. Heading into the 2021 season, the Titans are our #8 ranked team in Class A.

NEST Analysis – Clarity of objectives, youth outreach, and continual on-field progress should be the main focus points for the Islanders. Those three factors should be at the forefront not only in 2021 but well into the future. Simply stated, this Grand Island program should be able to produce more favorable results. It is the only Class A school in a relatively large community that has proven to be very interested in the game of soccer. Unlike many communities, Grand Island has a first class indoor soccer facility that can be utilized throughout the entire year. Upgrades to their own facilities should also be utilized to uplift this team. Other Islander programs, including the boys soccer team, have developed high rates of talent and success. This is a program that needs to flourish in order for the game to expand in the state of Nebraska. At Nebraska Soccer Talk, these are the stories we are here to cover. Coach Hanaphy and his program are worth supporting and covering. Once it “clicks”, the Lady Islander will be dangerous on the state stage. NEST Analysis – Waverly looked to be on the climb in 2018 but suffered a setback in 2019. As an up and coming team, results often resemble a rollercoaster. Regardless, there is still much to admire about this program and its future. Waverly, as a community, school, and team, continue to increase its thumbprint on the state stage. With that in mind, the Vikings may be the surprise team of 2021. If that prediction comes to fruition, do not expect them to be a one season wonder. Instead, Nebraska Soccer Talk anticipates a new soccer hub developing. Reece Dalton is the one known commodity heading into 2021. Dalton is a player that is capable of making an impact at any given moment during a game. Coach Michael Ziola will be tasked with strategizing around this piece and finding a few more. Nebraska Soccer Talk will be watching Waverly very closely throughout the 2021 campaign and beyond. Right now, the Vikings have been placed on our pre-season list of Teams on the Verge. Soon they may be making regular and sustained appearances in our Top 10.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Champions

NEST Analysis – Omaha South comes into 2021 as the defending Class A champions. It must be understood that the championship game was held in 2019. Regardless of the timeline, the Packers are kings of Class A right now. Anticipate 2021 to bring more of the same success to this program. Coach Joseph Maas has built a machine that consistently reloads with talent. It is a tremendous show to watch on an annual basis, a limited number of teams can match their skill, speed, and flair.

Luis Garcia brings talent and experience to a team that is sure to be filled with other special talents. A transfer from Omaha Bryan, Ismail Hassan will provide a boost to this roster. 

Entering 2021, Omaha South has earned their front-runner status. This Packer group will be in the title picture for the entirety of the season. Omaha South claims the #2 spot in our pre-season rankings.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Semi-Finalists

NEST Analysis – This was one of the most exciting teams in 2019, and the Lady Dragons appear primed to make another deep run at the state tournament. Coach Digger Hawkins has a team absolutely loaded with talent and experience. Perhaps most importantly, this talent can be found throughout several levels, not just in one or two positions. Look for Gretna to be one of the stellar teams of the 2021 season. Players such as Sarah Weber, Taylor Daffer, Chaley French, and Savannah DeFini are game changers capable of putting together great performances on any given night. Adding to that core are several talented sophomores and freshmen.

High expectations can be a double edged sword, so anything short of a state title game will most likely be considered a disappointment in many ways. Talent is one thing, putting it all together is entirely different. It will be fascinating to witness how Coach Hawkins utilizes all of these pieces. Nevertheless, as Taylor Swift so eloquently stated those types of challenges are considered to be “champagne problems”.

Belief and anticipation for this program is high, that is why they debut in our pre-season poll as the #2 squad in Class A and also hold a front runner status.

NEST Analysis – An unfortunate 2019 season should be followed up by a resurgence in the 2021 season for Omaha Burke. Bolstering their chances is the presence of Alyssa Judkins who will hold down the backline for the Bulldogs. Judkins is a top-tier player and should prove to be one of the most talented players in the state. The productivity in the attacking phase is a huge question mark with this squad. If answers can be found by Coach Anderson, a double digit win season is not a wild proposition. Nebraska Soccer Talk will be monitoring this team, especially during the early weeks of the season.

Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. In the future, we hope to provide sideline coverage of games, facility features, coach and player interviews. We look forward to the journey ahead. Thank you for being a part of our community. The sport of soccer is growing in Nebraska, and we intend to see it thrive.

NEST Analysis – A monumental turnaround has taken place at WNCC. A previously wounded program, the Lady Cougars posted an outstanding 13-4 record in 2019. With very few collegiate soccer programs located in the Western Nebraska region, every opportunity to showcase the game matters. The success of this team is crucial to growing the game throughout the state. No matter where the game is played, talent is present and deserves to be given recognition. Coach Todd Rasnic pulls double duty as he is in charge of both the men’s and women’s program at WNCC. Despite this uncommon arrangement, both programs appear to be on the right trajectory.
