Omaha Duchesne Academy – Class B Team Preview (Girls)

Previewing an upcoming season is never an easy task. To do so properly takes countless hours of emails, observations, statistical research, conversation, and reflection. Adding onto that difficulty are challenges, such as a cancelled 2020 season and lingering COVID restrictions, making our preview preparation feel almost impossible.

Despite these obstacles, the approaching 2021 season and its participants – whether that be players, coaches, fans, or families – deserve some semblance of normalcy. Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. Over the course of the next several weeks, NEST will overview EVERY high school soccer program in our state. This was done to the best of our ability using all of the information we could collect.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to support many fantastic teams, coaches, players, fans, and referees that make our game possible. One mission of this venture is to discover and centralize newsworthy information. This can only be done in collaboration with individual programs. As a whole, our sport must better promote itself in order to grow the player and supporter pool. We encourage every team to proudly and consistently advertise itself to us and the general public. The more information available, the more our game will grow. Soccer is a game historically left behind to linger in the background in the United States. That circumstance is changing, but that change will not happen automatically. Growing and covering all aspects of our sport will take effort from all of those who love it.

Disclaimer – To prepare for these articles, a questionnaire was sent to every school’s head coach and athletic director. Many of these questionnaires were returned in a timely fashion, others were not. Nebraska Soccer Talk prides itself on equal and in-depth coverage, but cooperation is needed to meet that goal. Please consider this to be our reasoning when it comes to article length and accuracy.

NEST Analysis – As the 2021 approaches, Omaha Duchesne looks to be one of the top teams in Class B soccer. A fantastic showing during the 2019 season contributes to those high expectations. This program has demonstrated winning ways in the past, and we expect that to continue. Madison Smith, Emma Ehrhardt, and Maggie Dowd makeup a solid trio at the varsity level. Duchesne will begin the season as our #5 ranked team in Class B. Morrison Stadium is the objective for this 2021 team.

Players to Watch – Molly Ramsey

State Status – Front Runner, Contender, Dark Horse, Up-And-Coming, Building, Too Early To Tell

NEST Analysis – Norris will look to launch a winning tradition in 2021. This is a program that is on the cusp of being very competitive in Class B. The more we research, the more positive indicators we see for this season and further into the future. As the game of soccer grows, the Norris community will be a high level priority. Turning these blossoming communities into soccer hot spots will do wonders for the game. The Titan fanbase is strong; they support their athletic programs especially when they are reaching state on a regular basis. The formula is simple: win, and the community will follow. Coach Talero is relatively new on the head coaching scene, and this is an exciting opportunity. The 2021 team will be led by Molly Ramsey. She is a valuable building block for this program.

Increasing the interest from the student body and finding more options in the player pool should be the main focus for the coaching staff. In recent seasons, quality players have earned college opportunities while playing for Lutheran High/Norfolk Catholic. NEST Analysis – Two schools come together in order to give more athletic opportunities to their students. For the smaller schools of Nebraska, this is the model of the future. These worthwhile partnerships help to showcase talent no matter the location or circumstance. This effort should be applauded and supported by the entire state, as many schools choose the easier route of not forming a soccer program.

For Lincoln Lutheran/Raymond Central, that effort has been rewarded and reinforced by stellar play from their female athletes. This team took off in 2019, achieving an impressive eleven game win total. They will look to build on that success during the 2021. Lauren Stull will be the primary factor in this effort. As we surveyed the state, her reputation only grew, leading us to place her on our Watch List for Class BStull is an excellent player that is signed to play at the next level with Hastings College. More pieces will need to emerge, but a state run in 2021 is a realistic goal for this team. Find them on our list of Teams on the Verge.

NEST Analysis – The story of this Lexington program will be one of the most interesting for years to come. In recent years, this has been a group that struggles to field a competitive team. With untold amounts of dedication, planning, and hard work that narrative changed in 2019. After one of the most successful seasons in recent memory, Lexington’s next opportunity would be delayed for a year. Now is their chance to once again showcase themselves to the state. Will the results of 2019 repeat? Will we see further improvement? Or will a set back take place? Those answers can only be provided by time. With Coach Keith Allen at the helm, the Lexington girls look to be under good and stable leadership. On the field, Janette Ortize will be the main attraction during the 2021 season.

NEST Analysis – Look for Kearney Catholic to be much improved heading into the 2021 season. A trio of experienced players provide the Shamrocks with an on-field boost. Senior Sydney Owen will look to control the midfield throughout the season, and she is well equipped for that task. On field production will be important, but senior leadership will also be a necessity. If additional pieces can be found in the younger classes, this could be a very solid squad. For Kearney Catholic, the future looks bright in Class B. This optimism stems from the impressive youth soccer infrastructure that has taken root in this community. The quality level of play within Kearney should bring joy to every soccer supporter.

NEST Analysis – A wait and see approach is being taken in the case of Holdrege. Early season performances will provide a clearer picture of this program’s current makeup. On the surface, this is a team that is looking to rise above the underdog status. The development of a playmaker or two would be a welcome addition for Coach Alex Mahundi. With last season’s cancellation, new faces are sure to be everywhere. Holdrege will be a competitive team and should not be taken lightly by any opponents. They are respected, but is 2021 the season where they become feared? At Nebraska Soccer Talk, we will be watching for those answers.
