Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Champions

NEST Analysis – Omaha South comes into 2021 as the defending Class A champions. It must be understood that the championship game was held in 2019. Regardless of the timeline, the Packers are kings of Class A right now. Anticipate 2021 to bring more of the same success to this program. Coach Joseph Maas has built a machine that consistently reloads with talent. It is a tremendous show to watch on an annual basis, a limited number of teams can match their skill, speed, and flair.

Luis Garcia brings talent and experience to a team that is sure to be filled with other special talents. A transfer from Omaha Bryan, Ismail Hassan will provide a boost to this roster. 

Entering 2021, Omaha South has earned their front-runner status. This Packer group will be in the title picture for the entirety of the season. Omaha South claims the #2 spot in our pre-season rankings.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Semi-Finalists

NEST Analysis – This was one of the most exciting teams in 2019, and the Lady Dragons appear primed to make another deep run at the state tournament. Coach Digger Hawkins has a team absolutely loaded with talent and experience. Perhaps most importantly, this talent can be found throughout several levels, not just in one or two positions. Look for Gretna to be one of the stellar teams of the 2021 season. Players such as Sarah Weber, Taylor Daffer, Chaley French, and Savannah DeFini are game changers capable of putting together great performances on any given night. Adding to that core are several talented sophomores and freshmen.

High expectations can be a double edged sword, so anything short of a state title game will most likely be considered a disappointment in many ways. Talent is one thing, putting it all together is entirely different. It will be fascinating to witness how Coach Hawkins utilizes all of these pieces. Nevertheless, as Taylor Swift so eloquently stated those types of challenges are considered to be “champagne problems”.

Belief and anticipation for this program is high, that is why they debut in our pre-season poll as the #2 squad in Class A and also hold a front runner status.

NEST Analysis – An unfortunate 2019 season should be followed up by a resurgence in the 2021 season for Omaha Burke. Bolstering their chances is the presence of Alyssa Judkins who will hold down the backline for the Bulldogs. Judkins is a top-tier player and should prove to be one of the most talented players in the state. The productivity in the attacking phase is a huge question mark with this squad. If answers can be found by Coach Anderson, a double digit win season is not a wild proposition. Nebraska Soccer Talk will be monitoring this team, especially during the early weeks of the season.

Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. NEST Analysis – A monumental turnaround has taken place at WNCC. A previously wounded program, the Lady Cougars posted an outstanding 13-4 record in 2019. With very few collegiate soccer programs located in the Western Nebraska region, every opportunity to showcase the game matters. The success of this team is crucial to growing the game throughout the state. No matter where the game is played, talent is present and deserves to be given recognition. Coach Todd Rasnic pulls double duty as he is in charge of both the men’s and women’s program at WNCC. Despite this uncommon arrangement, both programs appear to be on the right trajectory.

NEST Analysis – Coach Kennedy-Croft has an impressive and winding background in the game of soccer. Her experience includes playing and coaching at the Division I level most notably at the University of Connecticut. She is familiar with the NAIA level having previously coached in Washington. However, since her arrival, the Doane women’s program has sputtered in its development, posting a combined 13 wins since the 2016 season. Progress must be made within this team and very soon. So far, during the 2020 campaign, the Tigers are winless in 14 attempts. This program has had high levels of success in its history, we hope that Doane returns to those heights. The GPAC is incredibly competitive, making this rebuild no easy task. It will take the right pairing of coaching staff and players to elevate Doane to a competitive level.

NEST Analysis – After an impressive 2018 season, the Patriots took a step back in 2019 going 5-11. To find a silver lining is not difficult as a majority of those losses were within one goal difference. The game of soccer can be brutal, especially when momentum shifts against you, and that seemed to be the case with Millard South. Coach Cooney’s group will attempt to get back to that double digit win mark. With so many athletes and a large player pool to choose from, Patriot boys soccer could be on the incline.

NEST Analysis – The level of play within the OPS programs has increased dramatically over the last couple of seasons. One of the teams responsible for that uptick would have to be Omaha Bryan. The Bears will have a highly competitive team in 2021. Players will surely arise, as the upcoming talent has been a topic of conversation within soccer circles.  That optimism led to a dark horse status, as well as a place on the NEST’s pre-season poll. Omaha Bryan will begin the season as the #10 ranked team in Class A. Expect Bryan to be the breakout team of the 2021 season.

NEST Analysis – Norfolk is an interesting program because it has had years of competitiveness mixed in with some down years. That is part of the challenge of being one of the smallest Class A programs. It takes multiple talented classes to build a full squad. It can absolutely be done, but it takes hard work and a bit of luck. Regardless of on ball talent, Norfolk players always compete. They are known for being athletes with high motors, and that aspect makes them dangerous on any given night.  

For the first time in nearly a decade, the boys program will have a new leader. Joe Myers was recently named head coach after the 2019 season. 2021 will be the first glimpse of his squad in a competitive match. Arturo Castro will be a player to watch within this team. Since Norfolk is a program that seems to be new every year, it might take some time to understand this team.
