NEST Analysis – Crete is a program enjoying an incredible run of success and momentum. Perhaps even more admirable than the winning percentage is the fact that this may be one of the most passionate and dedicated programs in the state of Nebraska. With the work of Coach Derek Spence and so many others, Crete is truly a soccer school. As a result of that culture, the Cardinals have developed a pipeline of talent that is wonderful to watch on the field. The 2021 outlook is favorable due to the team makeup. A tremendous core of experienced and talented players are expected to be assisted by several promising youngsters. Even with new faces, an established style of play consisting of high tempo tactics, flair, and aggression should prevail. NEST Analysis – Nebraska Soccer Talk was built to cover programs like Holdrege and coaches such as Tyler Kroll. It must be admitted, at the beginning of this process very little was known about this program. Thankfully after much research and conversation, Nebraska Soccer Talk received an eye opening learning experience. When thinking of Nebraska soccer, Holdrege is not the first name that comes to mind. Perhaps that is how they prefer it as a lot of teams live off of that motivation material.  It is a small community located just south of I-80 in the middle of the state often overlooked by or simply unknown to soccer fans. Despite those facts, the Dusters keep winning and producing. It is time to bestow upon them the respect that they have earned. Coach Kroll seems to always get the most out of the available talent, 2021 should be no different. Holdrege will enter the season as the #8 team in Class B according to Nebraska Soccer Talk’s preseason poll.

NEST Analysis –  A growing community and surging club soccer scene indicates a promising future for Bennington boys soccer. Coach Dean Limbach should have plenty of upcoming talent at his disposable very soon. That uptick of talent will eventually contend at the highest levels of Class B. Predicting a state berth may be slightly too ambitious for the 2021 season, however, adding to the win column is definitely in order. For Nebraska soccer as a whole, the growth of soccer culture inside of Bennington should be a major focus point. Identifying and promoting the next up-and-comers for our sport is a one of many missions for Nebraska Soccer Talk. Look for Bennington to be a regular at the state tournament in the near future.

NEST Analysis – A premier program in the state, Lincoln Southwest is in contention for the Class A title on a yearly basis. 2021 looks to be no different as the Silver Hawks are ranked #4 in our pre-season poll. Coach Scheich welcomes back a massive amount of talent led by goalkeeper Nolan Fuelberth and midfielder Eli Rhodes. Pair those difference makers with other highly talented teammates and the expectations set themselves. A playing style emphasizing aggression, pace, and possession make LSW one of the most joyful teams to watch. Right now the Lincoln Southwest rules over Lincoln soccer. We will see if 2021 results in more of the same.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – The Titans were poised to have a fantastic 2020 season. Their team had the wonderful combination of talent and experience, the pieces were coming together. Many of those seniors are now on college rosters. Despite that team’s story ending prematurely, the 2021 squad will have an opportunity to make up for lost time. Jack Redd is one of the highest rated returners in the state. He recently signed to continue his soccer career at Creighton University. Add a few more pieces and this team will be able to compete with anyone. We anticipate that those pieces will be found, that is why we have Papio South ranked #5 in Class A. Lastly, we want to take a moment to recognize Coach Lawrence’s frightening experience during the off-season. Earlier this year, Coach Lawrence suffered a heart attack while working out. Thankfully, with the help of medical professionals, Coach Lawrence has made a full recovery. If that isn’t impressive enough, he spearheaded a movement to increase the number of AEDs available to law enforcement.  Well done Dave Lawrence, and good luck this season.

NEST Analysis – A perennial powerhouse in Class A, Marian will be seeking a return trip to the championship game at Morrison Stadium. Dominance on the field and the development of Division I prospects has become a norm at this school. For girls seeking a high level soccer experience, Marian is a favorite landing spot. That kind of reputation tends to build on itself, such is the case here. Much of that can be accredited to Coach DeGeorge who is one of the most respected soccer minds in the Metro. Emma Prososki will be the focal point of a talented varsity team. Look for Prososki to be a top goal creator in Nebraska during the 2021 season. Expectations for this team are high within the program and here at Nebraska Soccer Talk. Omaha Marian will enter the season as the fourth ranked team in Class A.

NEST Analysis – Gretna is always a competitive program that has transitioned beautifully from Class B to Class A. The 2019 season saw the Dragons fall just short of the championship contest. Nevertheless, it was a terrific season, which has become business as usual for Coach Ortlieb’s team. Gretna finds itself ranked #3 at the Class A level in our pre-season poll. A solid crop of returners, supplemented by talented newcomers such as Colin McClung and Maguire Perkins, justify these lofty expectations. In addition to on-field play, the Dragons have newly updated facilities that are extremely impressive. Training and game-days should be elevated by these resources.

NEST Analysis – Led by one the most well respected and knowledgeable coaches in the state, the Bearcats will seek to finish the job in 2021. A magnificent regular season in 2019 came to a surprising end as Papillion-La Vista upset #2 seeded Kearney in the first round of state. 

With that memory still fresh, there is little doubt that Kearney will return more determined than ever. This is expected to be an exciting squad composed of returning players that have fully bought into the Bearcat methodology. Every opponent will face a squad filled with tough, gritty, and disciplined athletes. With expectations high, there are still several unknowns when looking at this Kearney squad. That comes with the territory of being a Central Nebraska team that competes in Class A. The player pool and travel intensity are elements that must be faced on a yearly basis.  Despite those unknowns, our pre-season poll still ranked this team #7 in Class A. Previewing an upcoming season is never an easy task. To do so properly takes countless hours of emails, observations, statistical research, conversation, and reflection. Adding onto that difficulty are challenges, such as a cancelled 2020 season and lingering COVID restrictions, making our preview preparation feel almost impossible.

Despite these obstacles, the approaching 2021 season and its participants – whether that be players, coaches, fans, or families – deserve some semblance of normalcy. Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. Over the course of the next several weeks, NEST will overview EVERY high school soccer program in our state. This was done to the best of our ability using all of the information we could collect.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to support many fantastic teams, coaches, players, fans, and referees that make our game possible. One mission of this venture is to discover and centralize newsworthy information. This can only be done in collaboration with individual programs. As a whole, our sport must better promote itself in order to grow the player and supporter pool. We encourage every team to proudly and consistently advertise itself to us and the general public. The more information available, the more our game will grow. Soccer is a game historically left behind to linger in the background in the United States. That circumstance is changing, but that change will not happen automatically. Growing and covering all aspects of our sport will take effort from all of those who love it.

Disclaimer – To prepare for these articles, a questionnaire was sent to every school’s head coach and athletic director. Many of these questionnaires were returned in a timely fashion, others were not. Nebraska Soccer Talk prides itself on equal and in-depth coverage, but cooperation is needed to meet that goal. Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class B State Runner Up

NEST Analysis – In 2019, Columbus surprised many as they rampaged their way through Class B. A season full of success ended at Morrison Stadium as they lifted a runner-up state trophy, a highlight for this program. A surprise no longer, the Discoverers are on everyone’s radar heading into 2021. With winning and success, comes attention and expectation, a welcomed development for a prideful squad. Although they are almost two years removed from that historic season, Columbus returns an excellent core of players. Juan Rodriguez provides the team with an attacking threat that must be accounted for throughout a match. Israel Robledo, Jorge Tovar, and Garrett Esch add to this quality lineup. Coach John Arlt is an experienced leader that demands absolute commitment from his team. With all of those pieces, another memorable season could be right around the corner.
