Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. In the future, we hope to provide sideline coverage of games, facility features, coach and player interviews. We look forward to the journey ahead. Thank you for being a part of our community. NEST Analysis – Coach Kennedy-Croft has an impressive and winding background in the game of soccer. Her experience includes playing and coaching at the Division I level most notably at the University of Connecticut. She is familiar with the NAIA level having previously coached in Washington. However, since her arrival, the Doane women’s program has sputtered in its development, posting a combined 13 wins since the 2016 season. Progress must be made within this team and very soon. So far, during the 2020 campaign, the Tigers are winless in 14 attempts. This program has had high levels of success in its history, we hope that Doane returns to those heights. The GPAC is incredibly competitive, making this rebuild no easy task. It will take the right pairing of coaching staff and players to elevate Doane to a competitive level.

NEST Analysis – After an impressive 2018 season, the Patriots took a step back in 2019 going 5-11. To find a silver lining is not difficult as a majority of those losses were within one goal difference. The game of soccer can be brutal, especially when momentum shifts against you, and that seemed to be the case with Millard South. Coach Cooney’s group will attempt to get back to that double digit win mark. With so many athletes and a large player pool to choose from, Patriot boys soccer could be on the incline.

NEST Analysis – The level of play within the OPS programs has increased dramatically over the last couple of seasons. One of the teams responsible for that uptick would have to be Omaha Bryan. The Bears will have a highly competitive team in 2021. Players will surely arise, as the upcoming talent has been a topic of conversation within soccer circles.  That optimism led to a dark horse status, as well as a place on the NEST’s pre-season poll. Omaha Bryan will begin the season as the #10 ranked team in Class A. Expect Bryan to be the breakout team of the 2021 season.

NEST Analysis – Norfolk is an interesting program because it has had years of competitiveness mixed in with some down years. That is part of the challenge of being one of the smallest Class A programs. It takes multiple talented classes to build a full squad. It can absolutely be done, but it takes hard work and a bit of luck. Regardless of on ball talent, Norfolk players always compete. They are known for being athletes with high motors, and that aspect makes them dangerous on any given night.  

For the first time in nearly a decade, the boys program will have a new leader. Joe Myers was recently named head coach after the 2019 season. 2021 will be the first glimpse of his squad in a competitive match. Arturo Castro will be a player to watch within this team. Since Norfolk is a program that seems to be new every year, it might take some time to understand this team.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class B State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – The Bulldogs of North Platte are ready to compete with the best during the 2021 season. A track record of stellar results has Nebraska Soccer Talk convinced that this is a program ready to make a title run. Most casual soccer observers train their focus on the eastern portion of the state. The misguided assumption is that all of the attention worthy talent can be found in Lincoln or Omaha. However for the more universal fan, a ton of talent can be located many hours west in a town situated alongside I-80. Qualifying for the state tournament in 2019 was a significant achievement. Even so, the Bulldogs are hoping to make that road trip an annual gathering for coaches, players, and supporters.

NEST Analysis – Hastings is a highly successful Nebraska based program that has elevated the sport with its wonderful showing on a yearly basis. With so many collegiate women’s programs within our borders, it can be difficult to rise above a crowded field. However, Hastings College has distanced itself from the field. Even better, this success has been accomplished with some of the best homegrown talent Nebraska has to offer. As of right now, 35% of the roster is made up of Nebrakans. The Broncos consistently find talent that fits their culture and buys into the program’s standard. Even more impressive is the fact that the head coaching position is rotating regularly. Credit must be given to the athletic department for seemingly always hitting a home run with their hires. Coach Ovendale is the latest to hold the post and have major success. The season has the Broncos in title contention yet again.

University of Nebraska-Omaha

Head Coach – Tim Walters

Coach Walters arrived as the head of the program in 2016. Since that time, results have not fulfilled the expectations of a program with UNO’s standing. 2018’s advancement in the Summit league tournament provided a glimmer of progress and optimism for the future. However, it really needed to be followed up with a strong campaign in 2019, and that failed to materialize. Coach Walters seems to be a good candidate for this job, but it does need to be demonstrated by on-field success. From all accounts Coach Walters has been a dedicated and passionate soccer advocate as he honed his skills across many different levels of the game. The next few seasons will be crucial for the direction of his program.

NEST Analysis – Since its jump to division one athletics in 2011, UNO’s women’s soccer side has struggled to find consistent success. Since 2011, this program has not recorded a winning record. Simply put, that is very surprising given its location, facilities, and local recruiting pool. There have been moments of hope during that time with 2018 being the highlighted year of the Maverick program under Coach Walters. The state and the sport of soccer within our borders need more of that success. Women’s soccer at UNO must elevate itself to being a brand synonymous with winning, advocacy, and an attractive style of play. 

An uptick in local talent acquisition also serves as a point of optimism. Approximately half of the current roster is made up of homegrown Nebraskans, most of which are in their first or second year. Hopefully those players can serve as a launching point for Coach Walter’s program. On a lighter note, if you are a female soccer player that is located in the metro area and named Grace you have a very high chance of playing on this squad.
