Previewing an upcoming season is never an easy task. To do so properly takes countless hours of emails, observations, statistical research, conversation, and reflection. Adding onto that difficulty are challenges, such as a cancelled 2020 season and lingering COVID restrictions, making our preview preparation feel almost impossible.

Despite these obstacles, the approaching 2021 season and its participants – whether that be players, coaches, fans, or families – deserve some semblance of normalcy. Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. Over the course of the next several weeks, NEST will overview EVERY high school soccer program in our state. This was done to the best of our ability using all of the information we could collect.

NEST Analysis – After a disappointing 2018 season, Columbus Scotus returned to their proper place among the top-tier in Class B during 2019. More of the same is expected in 2021 as the Shamrocks look to win the Clash of Columbus. With two very good teams occupying the same city and class, an exciting competition full of pride and rivalry is soon to be underway. A playing style centered around possession, confidence on the ball, and pace can be anticipated. By the end of the season, Nebraska Soccer Talk expects more than a few standout players to emerge from this squad. As a result of that belief, Columbus Scotus enters the 2021 season as the #6 ranked team in Class B.

NEST Analysis – The Panthers enter the 2021 season with a lot of opportunity ahead of them. A new coach in Kyle Mather and the departure of leading players means a fresh start for many, as they attempt to earn their way into the starting XI. Macy Fundus and Erin Schwanebeck appear to be the best bets to take over playmaking responsibilities. The formula for Norfolk carries over from year to year. Win the easy ones, come out on top during most of your 50-50 battles, and possibly sprinkle in an upset or two. Doing that will place them into a favorable district and increase the chances of a state berth. Although they are one of the smaller Class A teams, Norfolk always finds a way to be competitive. The Panthers are the perfect example of how grit, hussle, and team chemistry can overcome many obstacles.

Elkhorn South should fit right in as they too have talent within their program. Mia Baltzell will be a highlight of a Storm squad looking to reload and reintroduce itself to the state. NEST Analysis – The Monarchs arrive into 2021 with high expectations and state aspirations. One of the surprise teams in 2019, Papillion-La Vista earned their way to the semi-finals. For that to happen, Coach Andre Watts will be depending on returners such as Nick Sells. This is a team worth watching this year and well into the future. The Monarchs are listed #6 overall for Class A  in Nebraska Soccer Talk’s pre-season list.

NEST Analysis – An argument could be made that Burke has consistently been the second most successful OPS boys soccer program over the last several years. The Bulldogs had a tremendous 2019 regular season before falling by one goal in the first round of districts to Lincoln Southeast. Coach Bratt should have a competitive team for the 2021 season, and that is why they debut on our list of Teams on the Verge. 

Much of that assumption is based on Coach Bratt’s reputation and the program’s history. This squad will be short on experience as only two players with varsity experience return. Omaha Burke has a large player pool and should be able to find enough pieces to make a run. Inexperienced is not synonymous with poor results. In fact, if managed properly this could be the beginning of a very fun future for Burke.  Watch out for freshmen forward/midfielder Wyatt Urban as he looks to earn a place in the squad.

Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. NEST Analysis – Due to COVID, the 2020 edition of the women’s Loper program was unable to showcase their skills this fall. Looking back the 2019 campaign could be described as less than ideal, as UNK finished near the bottom of the MIAA. This is a program that has a great deal of potential within the Nebraska soccer landscape. Kearney is an exceptional city that could attract many talented athletes. Pair that with a vibrant educational institution and the building blocks are in place for a competitive program. 

The MIAA is a highly competitive conference, there is absolutely no doubt about that. Teams such as Northwest Missouri, Central Missouri, and Fort Hays State are routinely tough opponents. However, those challenges are far from insurmountable. UNK must raise its level of play going forward. With three seasons of experience as the head coach, Chloe Roberts will need to find a way to elevate her squad in the coming years. This team appears to be fairly young; with some experience, the positive results may follow.

NEST Analysis – An exciting program, the Bellevue University women’s team has a bright future if their recent history is any indication. Coach Tom White is currently in his 2nd season as head coach with Bellevue University. In that short amount of time, an uptick in roster numbers and talent has occurred. It is a roster full of homegrown playmakers that will be able to compete at a very high level within the North Star conference. Recent transfers from Division I and II programs will bolster this team’s performances throughout the coming seasons. In addition, the Bruins have done very well in terms of branding which often goes overlooked in the grand scheme of things. 

Finally, from a recruiting and living standpoint, Bellevue University has advantages simply because of its placement in Sarpy County. Newly constructed  facilities located at Papillion Landing give the Bruins a major upgrade. Bruin home games are now played at this first rate facility. Unlike many other small-town NAIA schools, the allure of the Omaha metro area is there for the Bruins to exploit.  With all of those recruiting pulls, the Bruins are a team with a positive trajectory.

NEST Analysis – Lincoln Southeast is a school with a rich tradition of athletic success. Those lofty expectations should apply to the boys soccer program as well. During the four most recent seasons, the Knights have won a combined 25 contests or an average of 6.25 victories per season. Anticipate those results to change in the very near future. It is simply too large of a program to not be competitive.

The potential of this program is through the roof, and that is why we want so desperately to watch it succeed. In order for this sport to grow, our most populous high schools must embrace the game. Everything is there for the Knights to have a highly competitive program, and we look forward to covering this team at state in the coming years. Coach Rozsa and his staff must find that next level through player retention and development. We look forward to discovering and covering some very talented players wearing the black and gold.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Champions

NEST Analysis – The 2019 Class A champions come into 2021 ready to defend their place atop the mountain. Under normal circumstances that is a difficult task, now also consider that this is a team made up of almost entirely new faces. Good thing talent is always prevalent at Millard West. Coach Tevis-Butler has designed her program to reload not rebuild. However, chemistry and experience are necessary ingredients for a successful season. Those more subtle characteristics are mostly unknown at this point. It may only take a few games, but more observation is needed for these new look Wildcats. Even with that uncertainty, it would be silly to view this team as anything less than an absolute contender. Nebraska Soccer Talk has ranked Millard West as the #6 team in Class A in our first ever pre-season poll.

Previewing an upcoming season is never an easy task. To do so properly takes countless hours of emails, observations, statistical research, conversation, and reflection. Adding onto that difficulty are challenges, such as a cancelled 2020 season and lingering COVID restrictions, making our preview preparation feel almost impossible.

Despite these obstacles, the approaching 2021 season and its participants – whether that be players, coaches, fans, or families – deserve some semblance of normalcy. Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. Over the course of the next several weeks, NEST will overview EVERY high school soccer program in our state. This was done to the best of our ability using all of the information we could collect.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to support many fantastic teams, coaches, players, fans, and referees that make our game possible. One mission of this venture is to discover and centralize newsworthy information. This can only be done in collaboration with individual programs. As a whole, our sport must better promote itself in order to grow the player and supporter pool. We encourage every team to proudly and consistently advertise itself to us and the general public. The more information available, the more our game will grow. Soccer is a game historically left behind to linger in the background in the United States. That circumstance is changing, but that change will not happen automatically. Growing and covering all aspects of our sport will take effort from all of those who love it.

Disclaimer – To prepare for these articles, a questionnaire was sent to every school’s head coach and athletic director. Many of these questionnaires were returned in a timely fashion, others were not. Nebraska Soccer Talk prides itself on equal and in-depth coverage but cooperation is needed to meet that goal. NEST Analysis – Blair is a program that appears to still be searching for a coach. Once that individual is hired, he or she will find the talent pool to be quite impressive. There is no doubt that coaching is critical, but just about every coach will tell you “it’s not about the X’s and O’s, it’s about the Jimmys and Joes”. Players win games and for Blair, winning has become a habit. During the 2021 season, watch out for Kaedon Anderson as he attempts to climb up the in-state player rankings. Nebraska Soccer Talk thinks highly of his skill, leading us to include him on our pre-season Players to Watch list. Overall, the Bears look to add onto their previous success and will make a potential run in the state tournament. Blair will begin the season as the #7 ranked squad in Class B.
