After a year hiatus from high school soccer, anticipation around the state was mounting as we moved towards opening day. That excitement was only bolstered by the fact that many programs decided to test themselves right away.  A premier matchup featuring #5 ranked Papillion-La Vista South (Class A) and #3 ranked Lexington (Class B) was first on our list. It was an entertaining game that contained many exciting moments of individual and team talent. Lexington came out on top with a one to zero victory, and that victory was well earned as the Minutemen controlled momentum from start to finish.

The organization and movement of Lexington was particularly impressive. It appears they will be a team that looks to advance the ball through the midfield, before looking to the outside runners just as they cross midfield. Despite first game challenges, Papillion-La Vista South was in position to tie or win down the stretch. One shot in particular looked goal bound if not for a first-class save by the Lexington keeper. The Titans looked fluid on the counter attack throughout the game. Adjustments seemed to be made at halftime resulting in a much more balanced second half.

Man of the Match – Junior Casillas

NEST Quick Hits 

• Junior Casillas is as good as advertised. His skill set is as complete as they come as it contains speed, confidence on the ball, controlled touch, constant movement, and a bit of flair. He is and will continue to be one of the top overall players in the state. This player needs to be getting more recognition from the media and colleges. 
• Lexington’s defense was solid throughout this intense matchup. Lots of composure on the backline, and it was evident that a build up pattern is present. The defensive players knew their roles and where the ball should be placed. Unique to them is the presence of a DEEP sitting center back. It is one of the first things a soccer eye notices, and it was effective on this day. 
• Papillion-LaVista South was without their star player Jack Redd for this game. It appears that Redd is healing from an injury. We would have loved to see him against Lexington because a player of that caliber changes the dynamic of a game.  
• For South, Parker Hylok is a bright spot for the future. The freshman started in all contests this weekend and held his own. 
• Lexington made the most of their road trip to the Metro. They went on to play two more games: winning the second, but losing the third. 
• PLV South rebounded during their next contests. They went on to win their next two games and win the Bellevue East invite.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class B State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – Class B is utterly loaded for the 2021 season, and the presence of Roncalli Catholic only adds to that depth. Expect this team to be highly competitive with the presence of experienced returners. Play makers will need to be developed, but that is a task familiar to many coaches. Looking forward, be on notice for the freshman and sophomore players working their way through this program. A few of those individuals will provide a boost to the varsity level this spring. After qualifying for the state tournament in 2019, the standard has been set for the Crimson Pride. Nebraska Soccer Talk has included Roncalli as the #10 team in Class B.

Yesterday, it was announced that the two most consistent producers of boys soccer talent in the state of Nebraska will be joining the brand new Heartland Conference of the Boys Elite Clubs National League for the 2021-2022 club season.  Gretna Elite Academy and Sporting Omaha FC will join six other regional clubs in the brand new Heartland Conference.  This is great news for both clubs and the state of Nebraska.

The announcement is also exciting news for the Boys ECNL.  The ECNL, which was originally founded in 2009, is widely considered the top level of girls club soccer in the United States (Gretna Elite Academy’s girls sides also compete in the ECNL), however in recent years they have been expanding their reach and growing their platform on the boys’ side as well.  With the creation of the Heartland Conference, the ECNL adds seven new clubs (FC Wichita, KC Scott Gallagher, Sporting Iowa, SL Scott Gallagher (MO), and Vision Soccer Academy will join the Omaha clubs in the ECNL) and will shift SL Scott Gallagher (IL) from the Midwest Conference into the Heartland Conference.

“Gretna Elite Academy and Sporting Omaha joining ECNL is long awaited big news for boys soccer and finally gives the boys game a positive future for the top kids in the area,” said Gretna Elite Academy Boys Director Chris Dunford.

While the Omaha area has certainly produced it’s fair share of talented players on the boys side, there has been a relatively low ceiling of competition and national exposure available to the teams and players from the area.  The move to Boys ECNL gives both clubs and their players an increased level of competition, the opportunity for more national exposure, while also allowing them to consistently compete against some of the top clubs in-region.

Both Sporting Omaha FC and Gretna Elite Academy have worked together on the boys side in recent years to increase the exposure for their teams and players (including coordinating their college ID camps), and this is just another big step in a positive direction for the future of boys soccer in Omaha and in Nebraska as a whole.  Nebraska Soccer Talk is looking forward to watching both clubs and their players compete in the Boys ECNL in the coming season.  To read more about the Boys ECNL and the brand new Heartland Conference visit the Boys ECNL Website.

A compelling style of play makes Skutt not only effective but a joy to watch on the soccer field. This season, this team’s lineup will feature two premier talents. After a lost year, John Meyers and Zach Weis will be reintroducing themselves to opponents and fans alike. Both players are featured on our pre-season Players to Watch list and look to earn a spot on our post-season Best XI. Besides the previously mentioned talent, Coach Zabawa has a loaded roster to mold and shape. Nebraska Soccer Talk ranks Skutt as the preseason #1 team in Class B. NEST Analysis – Progress is the name of the game for the Benson Bunnies as they enter into 2021. Coach Hunter Jacobs will be seeking positive momentum and team buy-in throughout the season. Increasing the player pool through youth player retention is a goal of every OPS program; Omaha Benson is not naive to that fact. However, that task can be extremely challenging given the fluid nature of the sport and light transfer resistance in an open district. NEST Analysis – With Omaha Gross Catholic, the state will yet again receive the opportunity to witness wonderful play on the field. Coach Mike Nolte has an impressive program filled with skill and soccer prowess. In 2019, the Cougars qualified for the state tournament; in 2021, they will attempt to build upon that experience. A return to Morrison Stadium seems to be in the cards, at least that is the expectation. As a clear contender in Class B, Omaha Gross Catholic will begin the 2021 season ranked #5 by Nebraska Soccer Talk. As for the future, Gabe O’Doherty is an excellent freshman prospect.

NEST Analysis – 2021 could be a banner year for the Papillion-La Vista girls soccer program as they look to improve upon their 2019 state qualification. Rarely does so much talent occupy the same school at the same time, it is a circumstance engineered by hard work and luck. Adding to the excitement is the fact that the Monarch’s backline, midfield, and attack will all feature a Division I recruit. With Mykena Turner, Ella Guyott, and Lauryn Anglim on the field, Papio will feature one of the state’s most star studded lineups. For Coach Kelcher and her program, a year of high expectations is right around the corner. Papillion-La Vista will begin the season as the #3 team in Class A according to Nebraska Soccer Talk.
