This was done to the best of our ability using all of the information we could collect.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – Omaha Westside enters 2021 with exciting talent and state title aspirations when it comes to the girls soccer program. Lena Homan and Ellie Temero are two talents sure to garner attention from opposing coaches throughout the year. Game planning against them may prove to be a tough task, especially if other players are able to emerge. Qualifying for the state tournament in 2019 was an impressive accomplishment for the Warriors, but there are questions surrounding the follow-up campaign. Despite those unknowns, Coach Dunford has built a solid program, which usually produces at a high level. Given that reputation, Omaha Westside lands on our list of Teams on the Verge. With a few weeks of early season observation, the Warriors entering our Top 10 list is a very real possibility.

NEST Analysis – Another OPS program that seems to be on the rise is Central High, who should find a fair amount of on-field success in 2021. A 12-6 record in 2019 seems to indicate that the Eagles are ready to take the next step as a program. Expect the Eagles to be fast-paced and direct, which should make for many exciting match-ups. A more challenging metro make-up is always positive, and Central High can contribute to that excitement.

NEST Analysis – An argument could be made that Burke has consistently been the second most successful OPS boys soccer program over the last several years. The Bulldogs had a tremendous 2019 regular season before falling by one goal in the first round of districts to Lincoln Southeast. Coach Bratt should have a competitive team for the 2021 season, and that is why they debut on our list of Teams on the Verge. 

Much of that assumption is based on Coach Bratt’s reputation and the program’s history. This squad will be short on experience as only two players with varsity experience return. Omaha Burke has a large player pool and should be able to find enough pieces to make a run. Inexperienced is not synonymous with poor results. In fact, if managed properly this could be the beginning of a very fun future for Burke.  Watch out for freshmen forward/midfielder Wyatt Urban as he looks to earn a place in the squad.

Over the course of four articles, NEST will recognize many outstanding athletes that everyone should look forward to seeing on the pitch.

This list was put together using several resources such as coach recommendations, past all-state lists, statistical analysis from previous seasons, and observational research. The inclusions vary greatly in terms of location, age, and future plans. The listed athletes live in every corner of the state from Omaha to Scottsbluff. Many have signed or are committed to play soccer at the Division I level, while others are pursuing other interests in the future.

Even so, there are two traits that all inclusions of the inaugural NEST Players to Watch preview have in common.

1. Show stopping and jaw dropping ability on the field.
2. An admirable love for the sport of soccer. With their ability, passion, and outreach, this game will grow; that is the ultimate goal of Nebraska Soccer Talk.

NEST Analysis – Like many private schools, the Thunderbolts have flipped-flopped between Class A and B in recent years. This presents a unique circumstance as they are one of the larger schools when in Class B, yet one of the smallest when in Class A. This is an experience that very few programs are familiar with. 

Despite that fluidity, Pius has been competitive regardless of its class. It is a program that plays in a very structured manner that maximizes its pieces. A down 2019 season should make the returning players eager to showcase their skills in 2021.

Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. Creighton has a big opportunity to establish itself as the flagship women’s soccer program for the state. Located in the state’s most populous and talent rich city, Creighton must take the next step and begin to compete in the Big East. All of the pieces are in place; it is time to put the puzzle together. 2021 Signee Taylor Daffer is an excellent in-state addition, on what seems to be a more national and international roster. In the next few years, a dominant women’s program needs to arise from Nebraska. Will Creighton fill that role?

NEST Analysis – A consistent winner, the Warriors men’s program has finished with a winning record every year since 2011. They are routinely competitive during regular and postseason GPAC play. The 2020-2021 squad is filled with international talent from all across the globe. Under the leadership of Coach Martinez, this Midland program will always be in the discussion for GPAC titles. In recent program news, Midland University has had on-going discussions with the Fremont Soccer Club in regards to their playing fields. Hopefully that can be resolved in the near future, and a true home for this team can be established with a mutually beneficial agreement between the two parties.

NEST Analysis – A perennial powerhouse in Class A, Marian will be seeking a return trip to the championship game at Morrison Stadium. Dominance on the field and the development of Division I prospects has become a norm at this school. For girls seeking a high level soccer experience, Marian is a favorite landing spot. That kind of reputation tends to build on itself, such is the case here. Much of that can be accredited to Coach DeGeorge who is one of the most respected soccer minds in the Metro. Emma Prososki will be the focal point of a talented varsity team. Look for Prososki to be a top goal creator in Nebraska during the 2021 season. Expectations for this team are high within the program and here at Nebraska Soccer Talk. Omaha Marian will enter the season as the fourth ranked team in Class A.

Previewing an upcoming season is never an easy task. To do so properly takes countless hours of emails, observations, statistical research, conversation, and reflection. Adding onto that difficulty are challenges, such as a cancelled 2020 season and lingering COVID restrictions, making our preview preparation feel almost impossible.

Despite these obstacles, the approaching 2021 season and its participants – whether that be players, coaches, fans, or families – deserve some semblance of normalcy. Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. In the following article series, we will reveal our Pre-Season Top 10 rankings for the 2021 season.

This poll was developed while considering many different factors including program track records, recommendations from coaches, and roster strength. With that being said, much of this is subjective and opinions can vary. The rankings will be updated on bi-weekly basis. To the best of our ability, these rankings will reflect the reality of the soccer environment. Adjustments will be made as the season progresses and many conversations will take place. We look forward to those discussions. At season’s end, we will look back to review these pre-season rankings. What did we get right? Where did we go wrong? Which team surprised us all?

Also, included in each article is a section titled Teams on the Verge. These teams ranked just outside our Top 10 but are considered to be in contention. The rankings are fluid and flexible; any team could quickly enter our Top 10 list.
