Despite a thrilling end to regulation for the Crete Cardinals, the Schuyler Warriors boys soccer team rallied in overtime to beat their Central Conference foes 4-2.

By the 20th minute, Schuyler and Crete had already traded goals. Schuyler gained the advantage in the 61stminute off the foot of Omar Genchi.

“They sent the long ball really well,” Crete coach Derek Spence said of Schuyler. “That was one thing that they were doing and timing it correctly, and our guys didn’t adjust to that very well.”

Crete looked for an equalizer for the final 19 minutes, and found one with only three seconds left in the game.

The Warriors looked like a different team playing in overtime compared to regulation.

“The guys came out and did the job right away,” Schuyler coach Ulises Fuentes said. “We started pretty slow, it was bad, but  we managed to come out and play hard in overtime.”

Eight minutes into overtime, David Arciga found the net giving Schuyler even more momentum. The Warriors put the game out of reach three minutes later, securing a 4-2 overtime victory.

“They were just ready,” Fuentes said of his side in overtime. “They wanted the game really bad, so they came out and got the goal right away.”

The eighth-ranked Warriors moved to a 5-2 record on the season, after finishing third in the Kearney invite.

Meanwhile, Crete came into the game reeling from a 7-0 loss to No. 4 Skutt on April 1st. Spence called the Schuyler game a “builder” for the Cardinals.

“Skutt kind of shell shocked us,” Spence said. “We didn’t play well at all, and this game, I thought we showed up and we hung with them, we got ready to go… We’ll probably see Schuyler again (in the conference tournament), and the thing is, we can play with them.”

The Cardnials dropped to 3-2 after the loss
