Holdrege – Class B Team Preview (Boys)

Previewing an upcoming season is never an easy task. To do so properly takes countless hours of emails, observations, statistical research, conversation, and reflection. Adding onto that difficulty are challenges, such as a cancelled 2020 season and lingering COVID restrictions, making our preview preparation feel almost impossible.

Despite these obstacles, the approaching 2021 season and its participants – whether that be players, coaches, fans, or families – deserve some semblance of normalcy. Soccer in Nebraska and all those who participate deserve to be promoted. Over the course of the next several weeks, NEST will overview EVERY high school soccer program in our state. This was done to the best of our ability using all of the information we could collect.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to support many fantastic teams, coaches, players, fans, and referees that make our game possible. One mission of this venture is to discover and centralize newsworthy information. This can only be done in collaboration with individual programs. As a whole, our sport must better promote itself in order to grow the player and supporter pool. We encourage every team to proudly and consistently advertise itself to us and the general public. The more information available, the more our game will grow. Soccer is a game historically left behind to linger in the background in the United States. That circumstance is changing, but that change will not happen automatically. Growing and covering all aspects of our sport will take effort from all of those who love it.

Disclaimer – To prepare for these articles, a questionnaire was sent to every school’s head coach and athletic director. Many of these questionnaires were returned in a timely fashion, others were not. Nebraska Soccer Talk prides itself on equal and in-depth coverage, but cooperation is needed to meet that goal. Please consider this to be our reasoning when it comes to article length and accuracy.

Holdrege

Head Coach – Tyler Kroll

2018 9-6

State Status – Front Runner, Contender, Dark Horse, Up-And-Coming, Building, Too Early To Tell

NEST Analysis – Nebraska Soccer Talk was built to cover programs like Holdrege and coaches such as Tyler Kroll. It must be admitted, at the beginning of this process very little was known about this program. Thankfully after much research and conversation, Nebraska Soccer Talk received an eye opening learning experience. When thinking of Nebraska soccer, Holdrege is not the first name that comes to mind. Perhaps that is how they prefer it as a lot of teams live off of that motivation material.  It is a small community located just south of I-80 in the middle of the state often overlooked by or simply unknown to soccer fans. Despite those facts, the Dusters keep winning and producing. It is time to bestow upon them the respect that they have earned. Coach Kroll seems to always get the most out of the available talent, 2021 should be no different. Holdrege will enter the season as the #8 team in Class B according to Nebraska Soccer Talk’s preseason poll.

2018 4-10

State Status – Front Runner, Contender, Dark Horse, Up-And-Coming, Building, Too Early To Tell

NEST Analysis –  A growing community and surging club soccer scene indicates a promising future for Bennington boys soccer. Coach Dean Limbach should have plenty of upcoming talent at his disposable very soon. That uptick of talent will eventually contend at the highest levels of Class B. Predicting a state berth may be slightly too ambitious for the 2021 season, however, adding to the win column is definitely in order. For Nebraska soccer as a whole, the growth of soccer culture inside of Bennington should be a major focus point. Identifying and promoting the next up-and-comers for our sport is a one of many missions for Nebraska Soccer Talk. Look for Bennington to be a regular at the state tournament in the near future.

Players to Watch – Sena Ahovissi (University of Nebraska-Omaha soccer commit), Campbell Zimmers (South Dakota State University soccer commit), Ever Loveridge

NEST Analysis – The 2021 revival tour for the Lady Mustang program is a storyline to watch. A disappointing 2019 season will provide plenty of motivation for this talented group of players. At least on paper, Millard North is a definite contender heading into the season. Much of that prediction is based on the return of two top-tier playmakers, Sena Ahovissi and Campbell Zimmers. With this dynamic duo, Coach James Abueg has a great foundation to build his team around. Millard North enters the season ranked #10 by Nebraska Soccer Talk.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – A premier program in the state, Lincoln Southwest is in contention for the Class A title on a yearly basis. 2021 looks to be no different as the Silver Hawks are ranked #4 in our pre-season poll. Coach Scheich welcomes back a massive amount of talent led by goalkeeper Nolan Fuelberth and midfielder Eli Rhodes. Pair those difference makers with other highly talented teammates and the expectations set themselves. A playing style emphasizing aggression, pace, and possession make LSW one of the most joyful teams to watch. Right now the Lincoln Southwest rules over Lincoln soccer. We will see if 2021 results in more of the same.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – The Titans were poised to have a fantastic 2020 season. Their team had the wonderful combination of talent and experience, the pieces were coming together. Many of those seniors are now on college rosters. Despite that team’s story ending prematurely, the 2021 squad will have an opportunity to make up for lost time. Jack Redd is one of the highest rated returners in the state. He recently signed to continue his soccer career at Creighton University. Add a few more pieces and this team will be able to compete with anyone. We anticipate that those pieces will be found, that is why we have Papio South ranked #5 in Class A. Lastly, we want to take a moment to recognize Coach Lawrence’s frightening experience during the off-season. Earlier this year, Coach Lawrence suffered a heart attack while working out. Thankfully, with the help of medical professionals, Coach Lawrence has made a full recovery. If that isn’t impressive enough, he spearheaded a movement to increase the number of AEDs available to law enforcement.  Well done Dave Lawrence, and good luck this season.

Previous Season Accomplishments – 2019 Class A State Qualifier

NEST Analysis – Lincoln East is a team on the rise in Class A boys soccer. After years of being on the bubble, the Spartans appeared to turn the corner in 2019. Qualifying for state is a huge accomplishment for any program. It is made even sweeter by the fact that this program had been on the cusp for many years with winning records. Right now the stage of Lincoln, Nebraska soccer is ruled by Lincoln Southwest. However, the Spartans seem to present the biggest challenge to that claim. Looking at the program’s history, title contention would not be unfamiliar territory. Brayden McPhail will be headman for this squad during the 2021 season. With momentum firmly on their side, a repeat trip to Morrison Stadium is within the realm of possibility for this team as they are ranked #9 in our pre-season poll for Class A.

Creighton University – Women’s Soccer College Spotlight

Although it is rarely covered by the traditional media giants of the state, Nebraska is filled with exciting and competitive collegiate soccer programs. In fact, Nebraska contains a grand total of THIRTY programs for men and women. Those thirty programs compete across a wide variety of collegiate levels including Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college.

Nebraska Soccer Talk is here to examine, cover, and promote all of these teams. This task has been made a bit more challenging by the circumstances created by COVID-19. Depending on the playing level, conference, and school, the season outlook changes drastically. Roster information can also be in flux, depending on the school. Despite these challenges, our staff attempted to put together the best program summaries possible. To our knowledge, we are the only outlet providing such coverage to our state’s college programs.

Just like Nebraska Soccer Talk, this column will grow and become more in depth as the years pass. In the future, we hope to provide sideline coverage of games, facility features, coach and player interviews. We look forward to the journey ahead. Thank you for being a part of our community. The sport of soccer is growing in Nebraska, and we intend to see it thrive.

  • Kennedy Ruark – Overland Park, KS – D

NEST Analysis – Nebraska has three Division I women’s soccer programs; all of which seem to be at the same point in terms of recent records and trajectory. Creighton has a big opportunity to establish itself as the flagship women’s soccer program for the state. Located in the state’s most populous and talent rich city, Creighton must take the next step and begin to compete in the Big East. All of the pieces are in place; it is time to put the puzzle together. 2021 Signee Taylor Daffer is an excellent in-state addition, on what seems to be a more national and international roster. In the next few years, a dominant women’s program needs to arise from Nebraska. Will Creighton fill that role?

Concordia University

Head Coach – Jason Weides

2020 will be Coach Weides 13th season as head coach of the bulldogs program. Throughout his years in charge, his squad has compiled a 117-89-24 record and consistently achieved program firsts. Overall, this is a great coaching story as Coach Weides worked his way through the high school ranks and served as an assistant coach before getting a chance to lead a program. Since that time, Concordia has been a consistent winner in a tough GPAC field. With Weides at the helm, Concordia will have a stable and successful program for many years to come.

NEST Analysis – Concordia is a solid Nebraska program that represents the state very well on the collegiate stage. Concordia has elevated itself to a contender status in the GPAC. The roster is filled with international talent from Nebraska to England to Columbia. With that type of variety, some teams would fail to develop proper on-field chemistry. However, that is simply not the case with these bulldogs, which is a testament to the strong team culture. We can’t wait to cover this program for years to come.
